Ashwagandha, which is also called “Indian ginseng” is native to India.
Ashwagandha is a low growing perennial that grows up to 3 feet tall. Its leaves are long and elliptical, yellow-green. Its flowers are tiny bell-shaped followed by bright orange-red berries.
Plant ashwagandha in dry and sunny location of your garden. It needs sandy and well-draining soil in a way that water will drain out quickly, pH level should be around 7.5 – 8, neutral to slightly alkaline. Growing Ashwagandha is not possible in soil that retains moisture and remains waterlogged.
Ashwagandha can be direct sown outdoors following the last frost, approximately 1/8" below the surface of the soil and kept evenly moist. Otherwise, you can sow indoors in early spring to give your starts additional time to develop before going outside.
Keep soil moist as seeds begin to germinate. Transplant into larger containers and gradually expose to outdoor conditions. Transplant in late spring to a sunny location once plants are stable have reached a height of around 4" or more.
In hot, dry climates ashwagandha is typically harvested 150-180 days after planting. Roots are then cut into 4-inch chunks and dried.
